
According to the AP's Schering's Board to Discuss Merck Bid, relations between Merck and Schering are getting tense over Merck's unsolicited bid for Schering. Schering's CEO, Hubertus Erlen, lead what the AP characterized as a "spurious rebuttal of [Merck's] advances." If the companies merge, you can bet that every antitrust regulator in the world will be taking a very close look at this one. I can hardly wait . . .
Another merger involving pharmaceutical companies was announced today. According to Siga and PharmAthene Agree to Merge, vaccine developer, Siga Technologies, Inc., and private biotechnology company, PharmAthene Inc., "have entered into a nonbinding agreement to merge and operate under the name PharmAthene." The merged "will offer a portfolio of biodefense products targeting anthrax, smallpox and chemical nerve agents, among other vaccines and therapeutic drugs."
Finally, Spain's Grifols, Inc. announced the acquisition of PlasmaCare, Inc. Grifols produces biopharmaceuticals; PlasmaCare, based in Cincinnati, Ohio, specializes in plasma collection. According to Grifols' press release, the acquisition will make Grifols' "the world's second largest supplier of plasma."
